Boniface
Germanic missionary saint
Boniface is an innkeeper or tavern host.
The term comes from a jovial landlord character in George Farquhar's 1707 play *The Beaux' Stratagem*, whose name became generic for the role.
The word is literary and old-fashioned: The boniface welcomed the weary travelers with a roaring fire and a full tap. (Capitalized Boniface is also a given name, notably borne by several popes and saints.)
