Eastern Roman Empire

Greek-speaking Roman successor

The Eastern Roman Empire is the eastern half of the Roman Empire after its administrative division in the late fourth century, with its capital at Constantinople (modern Istanbul).

It survived the fall of Rome by nearly a thousand years, until Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in 1453.

Historians typically call it the Byzantine Empire, though its inhabitants considered themselves Romans.
