Viking raids
Scandinavian coastal attacks
Viking raids were seaborne attacks by Scandinavian warriors during the late 8th through 11th centuries, targeting coastal settlements, monasteries, and trading centers across Europe.
The raids were characterized by swift strikes from longships, looting of valuables, and often taking captives as slaves.
The Viking raids on Lindisfarne in 793 shocked Christian Europe.
The term now sometimes describes any sudden, predatory incursion.
