stirrup

Saddle's hanging footrest

A stirrup is a loop or ring that hangs from a saddle to support a rider's foot.

Stirrups come in pairs, one on each side, allowing the rider to mount and maintain balance.

The shape extends to similar foot supports: the stirrups on a gynecological examination table, or the small bone in the middle ear (also called the stapes).

She slipped her boots into the stirrups and urged the horse forward.
