Black Hills

Dakota mountain region

The Black Hills are a small, isolated mountain range in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming.

Sacred to the Lakota Sioux, the hills became contentious after gold was discovered there in 1874.

Mount Rushmore, carved into the granite, depicts four U.S. presidents.

The name comes from the dark appearance of pine-covered slopes seen from a distance.
