Sitting Bull

Lakota war chief

Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader who united Sioux tribes against U.S. expansion in the 1870s.

He is best known for his role in the defeat of George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.

After years of resistance and exile in Canada, he was killed by Indian police in 1890.

His name evokes Indigenous resistance to American westward expansion.
