blackboard

Classroom writing surface

A blackboard is a dark, smooth surface for writing on with chalk, traditionally found in classrooms.

The teacher writes, students copy.

Despite the name, blackboards are often green.

The word persists even as whiteboards and digital screens replace them: The professor covered the blackboard with equations.
