Standing Rock
Sioux tribal homeland
Standing Rock is a Sioux reservation straddling the border of North and South Dakota, home to the Hunkpapa Lakota and other bands.
The name gained widespread recognition during 2016-2017 protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, when thousands gathered at Standing Rock to oppose the pipeline's route near tribal water sources and sacred sites.
The Standing Rock protests drew international attention to indigenous rights.
