CIA
U.S. intelligence agency
The CIA—Central Intelligence Agency—is the principal foreign intelligence service of the United States, responsible for gathering and analyzing information about foreign governments, organizations, and individuals.
Established in 1947, it conducts covert operations abroad and has become synonymous with espionage in American culture: The CIA has been accused of meddling in foreign elections.
In casual speech, CIA often suggests secrecy or surveillance: You don't have to be so CIA about your weekend plans. (Lowercase cia has no standard meaning in English.)
