Amazons

Legendary female fighters

Amazons are the legendary female warriors of Greek mythology who lived apart from men and excelled in combat.

The name extends to the Amazon River and rainforest, named by Spanish explorers who claimed to encounter female warriors there.

In contemporary usage, Amazons often refers to products or services from the retail giant: I'm waiting on two Amazons to arrive. (Lowercase amazons describes strong women generally or a genus of parrots.)
