The Amazon
South American river
The Amazon is the vast river system in South America, the world's largest by volume, flowing roughly 4,000 miles from the Andes to the Atlantic.
By extension, it names the surrounding rainforest—the Amazon basin—Earth's most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystem.
The Amazon is often called the lungs of the planet.
Since the 1990s, Amazon also refers to the dominant American e-commerce company, now simply Amazon in everyday speech: I ordered it on Amazon.
