Spartans

Ancient Lacedaemonian warriors

Spartans were citizens of Sparta, the ancient Greek city-state renowned for its military culture and discipline.

Soldiers trained from childhood for warfare, producing warriors legendary for their toughness and willingness to die in battle: the three hundred Spartans at Thermopylae.

The word now describes anyone displaying similar qualities—austere, disciplined, uncomplaining: The team took a Spartan approach to training.

Spartans also names athletic teams, particularly Michigan State University's. (Lowercase spartan is the adjective.)
