Manaus

Jungle city, Brazil

Manaus is a city in northwestern Brazil, the capital of Amazonas state, situated at the confluence of the Negro and Amazon rivers.

It serves as the commercial hub of the Amazon basin, accessible to ocean vessels despite lying a thousand miles inland.

The city boomed during the late 19th-century rubber trade, leaving ornate architecture like the famous opera house, then declined when Asian plantations undercut Brazilian rubber.
