wind vane

Rooftop wind indicator

A wind vane is a device, typically mounted on a rooftop or pole, that pivots freely to show which direction the wind is blowing from.

The classic design features an arrow or decorative figure—often a rooster, hence the synonym weathercock—balanced on a vertical spindle.

Wind vanes are among the oldest meteorological instruments and remain common as both functional weather indicators and architectural ornaments.
