leadline

Nautical depth measure

A leadline is a weighted rope or cord used to measure water depth, traditionally in nautical contexts.

The lead weight at the end would be dropped overboard, and markings on the line indicated fathoms.

In fishing, a leadline is a weighted line along the bottom edge of a net to keep it submerged: The leadline dragged along the seafloor.

The term also appears in horse handling, where a lead line (often two words) is a rope attached to a halter for guiding the animal.
