riverman
Waterway boat operator
A riverman is someone who works on or along rivers—piloting boats, running ferries, logging, or otherwise making a living from river commerce.
The term evokes an earlier era of American expansion when rivers were primary trade routes: The old riverman knew every sandbar and snag on the Mississippi.
Also rivermen.
