shoals

Where boats ground

Shoals are shallow areas in a body of water where the bottom rises near the surface, creating hazards for navigation.

A ship may run aground on shoals.

The word also means a large group of fish swimming together: A shoal of herring passed beneath the boat.

Figuratively, shoals suggest hidden dangers or difficulties: the shoals of academic politics.
