river locks

Waterway level changers

River locks are enclosed chambers in waterways that raise or lower boats between different water levels.

Gates at each end hold water in or out; the chamber fills or drains to match the level ahead, letting vessels pass through dams or around rapids.

We waited twenty minutes for the lock to fill before continuing upstream.

The Panama Canal's locks are among the world's most famous.
