soundings

Nautical depth measurements

Soundings are measurements of water depth, taken by lowering a weighted line or using sonar.

The term extends to any preliminary investigation or inquiry: The committee took soundings before announcing the policy.

To take soundings is to gauge opinion or test reactions before committing to action.

In the literal nautical sense, a ship is in soundings when the water is shallow enough to measure.
