skipjacks

Striped Atlantic tunas

Skipjacks are fish that leap or skip along the water's surface, most commonly the skipjack tuna—a fast-swimming species important to commercial fishing and often canned as "light tuna." The name also applies to various other jumping fish and to the click beetles that flip themselves into the air when turned on their backs.

In Chesapeake Bay, a skipjack is a traditional oyster-dredging sailboat: The skipjacks still work the bay each winter.
