warding

Deflecting potential threats

Warding is the act of guarding, protecting, or defending against harm or danger.

The term appears most commonly in fantasy gaming and fiction, where it refers to magical protection—placing wards or protective spells on a person, object, or location to repel evil or unwanted intrusion.

Outside these contexts, warding survives mainly in the phrase warding off, meaning to deflect or keep something undesirable at bay: She made a gesture as if warding off bad luck.
