obelisk

Pyramidal-topped column

An obelisk is a tall, four-sided stone pillar that tapers to a pyramidal point at the top.

Ancient Egyptians carved them as monuments, and the form has been widely imitated: The Washington Monument is an obelisk.

In typography, obelisk is another name for the dagger symbol (†), used for footnotes or to mark deceased persons.
