timbering

Wooden structural bracing

Timbering is the wooden framework used to support tunnels, mines, or excavations during construction.

The term refers both to the structural timbers themselves and to the act of installing them: The timbering in the old mine shaft had rotted dangerously.

In forestry, timbering can also mean the harvesting of trees for lumber.
