steel reinforcement
Embedded metal bars
Steel reinforcement is metal bars, mesh, or cables embedded in concrete to increase its tensile strength.
Concrete resists compression well but cracks under tension; the steel carries those forces.
The most common form is rebar—ribbed steel bars placed in a grid pattern before concrete is poured.
The foundation requires steel reinforcement to meet code.
