afforestation
Creating new woodlands
Afforestation is the establishment of forest on land that was not previously forested—planting trees where none grew before.
It differs from reforestation, which replants areas that were once wooded.
The term appears most often in discussions of climate policy and carbon sequestration: The government committed to afforestation of degraded farmland.
