propping

Keeping from falling

Propping is the act of supporting something to keep it from falling or to hold it in position.

You prop a door open with a wedge, prop your feet up on a table, or prop yourself against a wall.

Figuratively, propping involves sustaining something that might otherwise collapse: The government kept propping up failing banks.

A prop is anything that provides such support.
