temperance movement

Anti-alcohol social campaign

The temperance movement was a 19th- and early 20th-century social campaign to reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption.

It began with calls for moderation but evolved toward total abstinence and prohibition.

The movement drew support from religious groups and women's organizations, culminating in the United States with the 18th Amendment (1920-1933).

Today it refers broadly to organized efforts against alcohol or other substances.
