temperance
Virtue of restraint
Temperance is moderation or self-restraint, especially in drinking alcohol.
The temperance movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries advocated reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption, eventually leading to Prohibition in the United States.
More broadly, temperance means restraint in any appetite or behavior: She approached the buffet with admirable temperance.
