intemperance
Lack of moderation
Intemperance is lack of moderation or self-restraint, especially in drinking alcohol.
The word carries a formal, somewhat old-fashioned tone from its prominence in 19th-century temperance movements: The preacher railed against the evils of intemperance.
More broadly, it can describe any excessive indulgence: intellectual intemperance, intemperance of speech.
