bathtub gin

Homemade speakeasy liquor

Bathtub gin is cheaply made, low-quality gin, especially the homemade liquor produced during Prohibition in the United States.

The name comes from the practice of mixing alcohol with flavorings in vessels large enough to hold—bathtubs being convenient.

The term now applies loosely to any crude homemade spirit: They were brewing bathtub gin in the basement.
