prohibitionist
Anti-alcohol movement member
A prohibitionist advocates for banning something, most often alcohol.
The term recalls the Prohibition era in the United States (1920–1933), when the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages was constitutionally forbidden.
Today it applies more broadly to anyone favoring legal bans: drug prohibitionists, gambling prohibitionists.
The word often carries a dismissive tone, implying excessive moralism.
