rum-running
Prohibition-era smuggling trade
Rum-running is the illegal transportation of alcoholic beverages, especially across borders or by sea.
The term emerged during Prohibition in the United States, when smugglers brought liquor from Canada or the Caribbean.
Though the era ended in 1933, rum-running still describes any large-scale alcohol smuggling: His grandfather made a fortune rum-running during Prohibition.
