surcoats
Knights' outer garments
Surcoats are loose outer garments worn over armor in medieval times, typically sleeveless and reaching to the knees or below.
Knights wore surcoats displaying heraldic designs to identify themselves in battle: The knight's surcoat bore his family crest.
The term also applies to similar outer garments worn by civilians in the Middle Ages.
