lists

Catalogs or tilts

Lists is an old word for a combat arena—the enclosed field where knights jousted at tournaments.

To enter the lists is to join a competition or conflict, from the image of a challenger riding into that space.

The expression survives mainly in formal or literary contexts: She entered the lists as a candidate for mayor.
