putsch

Sudden government seizure

A putsch is a sudden, violent attempt to overthrow a government—a coup, typically by a small group.

The word entered English from German after failed uprisings in 1920s Germany: the Beer Hall Putsch.

It often implies an amateurish or unsuccessful attempt: The generals' putsch collapsed within hours.
