blackcurrant

Dark jam berry

Blackcurrant is a small, dark purple berry with a sharp, tangy flavor, used in jams, juices, cordials, and liqueurs like cassis.

The shrub that produces it grows widely in Europe but was long banned in parts of the United States for harboring a fungus that damaged pine trees.

The flavor is common in British sweets and drinks but relatively unfamiliar to Americans: blackcurrant jam, Ribena is a blackcurrant drink.
