gourd

Dried decorative fruit

A gourd is the hard-shelled fruit of certain vines in the cucumber family, typically dried and hollowed out for use as a container, decoration, or musical instrument.

The term also refers to the plant itself.

Gourds come in a wide variety of shapes—from round to bottle-shaped to bizarrely lumpy—and are often displayed as autumn decorations alongside pumpkins.

Informally, gourd means head: Use your gourd!

If someone is out of their gourd, they're crazy or intoxicated.
