butternut

Tan winter squash

Butternut is a North American walnut tree, or its edible nut, which has a rich, oily flavor.

The wood is prized for carving.

During the American Civil War, butternut referred to Confederate soldiers or sympathizers, from the yellowish-brown dye made from butternut bark that colored homespun uniforms: The road was thick with butternuts heading south.

Butternut squash is a different thing entirely—a tan, bottle-shaped winter squash with orange flesh.
