blot

Dab to dry

A blot is a spot or stain, especially of ink: an ink blot on the page.

To blot is to make such a mark, or conversely, to absorb liquid by pressing something absorbent against it: She blotted the spill with a napkin.

A blot on something is a flaw that mars its reputation: a blot on his record.

To blot out is to obscure or obliterate completely: Clouds blotted out the sun.
