somatotype

Constitutional body type

Somatotype is a classification of human body types based on physique.

The system identifies three basic builds: ectomorph (thin, lean), mesomorph (muscular, athletic), and endomorph (soft, rounded).

Developed by psychologist William Sheldon in the 1940s, who controversially linked body type to temperament.

The concept remains useful in fitness and sports science, though the psychological claims have been discredited: Her training program was designed for her mesomorphic somatotype.
