paw

Clawed animal foot

A paw is the foot of an animal that has claws or nails—dogs, cats, bears, and the like.

The word extends to human hands, usually dismissively: Get your paws off my stuff.

To paw is to touch or handle clumsily or too eagerly: He pawed through the drawer looking for his keys.

When animals paw, they scrape or strike with a foot: The horse pawed the ground.
