insole

Footwear's inner layer

An insole is the inner sole of a shoe—the part your foot rests on.

Removable insoles can be replaced with custom or cushioned versions for comfort or arch support: These gel insoles made my work boots bearable.

The term also refers to aftermarket inserts placed inside shoes.
