ship canal
Artificial shipping route
A ship canal is an artificial waterway built wide and deep enough for large vessels to pass through.
Ship canals typically connect bodies of water that would otherwise require lengthy voyages around landmasses: The Panama Canal cut thousands of miles off the journey between Atlantic and Pacific ports.
They may also bypass unnavigable stretches of river or link inland ports to the sea.
