tidal basin
Tide-controlled pool
A tidal basin is a body of water connected to a tidal source, designed so water can flow in at high tide and be retained as the tide falls.
Such basins served historically as docks where ships could remain afloat for loading and unloading regardless of tidal changes.
The term also applies to ornamental pools in urban settings that fill and empty with tidal rhythms.
The cherry blossoms around the tidal basin draw visitors each spring. (Capitalized Tidal Basin refers to the landmark in Washington, D.C.)
