drainage canal
Engineered water pathway
A drainage canal is an artificial waterway designed to carry excess water away from an area—removing standing water from agricultural fields, urban districts, or low-lying land.
Unlike irrigation canals that bring water in, drainage canals take it out: The drainage canal prevented flooding in the delta farmland.
Also called a drainage ditch when smaller.
