towpaths

Canal walking routes

Towpaths are paths alongside canals or rivers, originally used by horses or mules pulling boats with ropes.

The animals would walk the towpath while towing barges laden with cargo.

Today towpaths serve mainly as recreational trails for walking and cycling: We biked along the towpath for miles.
