lock gates

Water level controllers

Lock gates are the hinged or sliding doors at each end of a canal lock, designed to hold back water and create a watertight chamber.

By opening and closing the gates, boats can be raised or lowered between water levels of different elevations: The lock gates slowly swung open as the water equalized.

Most locks have two sets of gates—one upstream, one downstream.
