overland route
Cross-country trail
An overland route is a path of travel across land rather than by sea or air.
The term often appears in historical contexts describing trade and migration paths: the overland route to California, silk road caravans following ancient overland routes.
Any journey that stays on land when water travel is an alternative can be called overland: We took the overland route instead of the ferry.
