closet

Built-in storage chamber

A closet is a small room or enclosed space for storage, especially for clothes.

In American English, closets are built into bedrooms; in British English, the term more often refers to a wardrobe or small storage room.

Closet also describes something private or secret: a closet smoker hides the habit; to come out of the closet is to reveal one's homosexuality publicly.

To closet yourself is to withdraw into privacy: She closeted herself in her study.

A skeleton in the closet is a shameful secret.
