shahs
Iran's former monarchs
Shahs is the plural of shah, the title used by rulers of Iran (formerly Persia) and certain other Middle Eastern and South Asian kingdoms.
The word comes from Persian and means king or sovereign.
The last shah of Iran was Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was deposed in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The shahs of the Pahlavi dynasty modernized Iran but ruled autocratically.
